Mechanical Pencils
xhtml
A mechanical pencil is an instrument for writing or drawing in which the graphite lead is not attached to the outer casing as is in standard pencils. This means that the lead can be extended as it wears away removing the need for sharpening. Other commonly used names for the mechanical pencil are: propelling pencil, automatic pencil, drafting pencil, clicky pencil and clutch pencil.
Nearly all mechanical pencils can be refilled except for the very inexpensive ones which are generally disposable.
Different lead thicknesses and sizes are easily available and some of the most common ones are sized: .3mm, .5mm, .7mm, .9mm, 1.4mm and 2.0mm. HB and B hardness leads are the most often used as separate leads tend not to have as many grades available as a standard pencil.
Propelling pencils and automatic pencils tend to have a .7mm or .5mm lead thickness. This pencil would be a good choice for writing and more precise work.
Clutch pencils can hold a much thicker lead, 2mm-4mm which is held in place by a jaw like mechanism which opens and closes to release the lead. This type of clutch pencil would normally only hold one lead at a time but there are exceptions to this rule. This pencil would be a good choice for drawing and sketching.
Many mechanical pencils come complete with an eraser tucked away somewhere either under the top or within the barrel. This is also replaceable and generally easily available.
