Ballpoint Pens
xhtml
The ballpoint pen, also called a biro (after its inventor Laszlo Biro) is probably one of the most commonly used pens of all. It writes using an oil based ink which dries almost immediately after contact with the paper. The ink chamber relies on gravity to dispense the ink onto the ball which means that a ballpoint is not very practical for writing upside down or on surfaces with a low adherence. However there are certain ballpoint pens such as the Fisher Space Pen that do overcome this problem by using a gas pressurised piston refill which forces the ink towards the point.
There are two types of ballpoint, the disposable and the refillable. Disposable ballpoints are usually made of plastic and can be very inexpensive. Once the ink has been consumed you simply throw the pen away. Refillable ballpoint pens are generally higher in price and made of higher quality materials hence certain pen companies offering a lifetime guarantee. They generally have a good selection of refills available in different colours and point sizes to suit the individual.
A ballpoint pen requires the writer to apply a certain amount of pressure to the paper when writing. Some people will find it harder to write with a ballpoint than a rollerball pen or a fountain pen for instance. Ballpoints are usually the prefered choice for filling in important documents because of the inks permanent, non smudge qualities.
